ECOBOND® Paint Hello. We are here today visiting with Paul Delmonico paint manufacturer with Old Western Paint. Welcome Paul.

Paul Delmonico: Thank you. Thank you for having me. ECOBOND® Paint Today we're going to be discussing

ECOBOND Paint, which is the premier provider of environmental paint products focused on protecting human health from the dangers of lead, smoke, and odors. We make paint with a purpose so you can paint with a purpose. Paul, how many years have you been with Old Western Paint in the manufacturing?

Paul Delmonico: Old Western Paint's been open since 1961. My father started the company. I grew up working down here. But I've been actually running the manufacturing since about 1990.

ECOBOND® Paint Wow. Quite a while.

Paul Delmonico: Yeah, I put 21 years of manufacturing here.

ECOBOND® Paint And you have partnered with ECOBOND now for how many years?

Paul Delmonico: We've been with ECOBOND for about 13 years now, that we've been developing products and manufacturing with them.

ECOBOND® Paint So you know the product quite well?

Paul Delmonico: Know it very well, from the ground up.

ECOBOND® Paint Very good. Paul, we have been asked about the mistaken assumption that ECOBOND Lead Defender doesn’t cover as well as regular paints during application. Can you explain this?

Paul Delmonico: Well it does cover as well. It covers what we call a "dry hide." Now what a dry hide is, is when you have a higher PVC product that it takes its coverage during the drying process. See some paints, they give you what we call a wet hide, meaning that as you're rolling the paint on or applying it onto the surface, that it gives you the coverage. Well ECOBOND doesn't do that. It needs to be put on it at the application levels that it's recommended at. And then as it dries, you'll see the coverage will happen. So, you basically got to let it dry before you see it do its job perfectly.

ECOBOND® Paint Got you. So, a dry hide is not necessarily a bad thing within paint products, and anyone painting should not be alarmed with this or trouble by the wet coating. Paul Delmonico: Oh no, it's just you have to understand that it is a dry hide product, so you don't over apply it as you're putting it on. You just put it on at the recommended levels, and it will do its job the way it's supposed to do it, and dry and give you good coverage.

ECOBOND® Paint So it's the same coverage but you don't see it until it's dry, basically?

Paul Delmonico: Correct. It is the same coverage and so you don't worry about that. You just have to know that the application is important.

ECOBOND® Paint Will this affect the coverage rate of the wet film?

Paul Delmonico: It will not affect the coverage rate. You know, like I said, recommendation of what the coverage you needed to give you the lead treatment, and the painting properties is important. So, follow those recommendations and the product will do its job.

ECOBOND® Paint Very good. Can you explain hiding versus stain-blocking?

Paul Delmonico: Well, hiding is what it means when you actually get the coat on the wall and you're covering the substrate and giving yourself an even substrate coating that doesn't have anything bleeding through it. Stain-blocking is when you're physically trying to hide something on the wall, a water stain, a magic marker stain, some of that type of stuff. Now ECOBOND is not made to be a stain-blocker but it will give you a good hiding power as it puts it on the wall.

ECOBOND® Paint Very good. Dry hide would then fall into this in the hiding would improve once the film has dried, correct?

Paul Delmonico: Yes, it does. Now how this works is that when you have a high PVC product, that means you have a higher pigment volume concentration. And so, some paints they have a higher resin concentration or high vehicle concentration and that's what gives you more of the wet hide. Well, when we get into a higher pigment volume concentration, the product has to get the pigments have to kind of line up, and they have to get themselves into their lined-up pattern so that they give you the hiding power as they're lining up. Well takes some time to line up and they do that through the drying process. And so that's why it's a time limit of letting it dry so that those pigments that we've trained to be in that paint will stack up and give you the hiding power that you need.

ECOBOND® Paint And regular paints would pretty much stack up automatically through.

Paul Delmonico: Well, they're not having to stack up because they don't have as much a pigment in them. So due the fact that they have the vehicle in them, that they are flowing out on the wall with that vehicle causing it in there. So, it's just a different way of getting your hiding power.

ECOBOND® Paint With what would you have explained ECOBOND is clearly different than regular paints. What makes ECOBOND better than regular pain for serving the purpose of lead treatment?

Paul Delmonico: It's a lead treatment. There is nothing I've ever seen on the market that gives you lead treatment and will make lead inert through a painting product. I mean for the protection that it can give you just through a paint coating, it's just amazing to me and it has been since I first worked with it. I mean the patented side of it that they put out there, it's just done wonders for what lead can be stopped with, and how we don't have to worry about it with our children anymore.

ECOBOND® Paint And typical paints would or encapsulants, they would seal that in much like ECOBOND does but there's absolutely no treating capability for that lead.

Paul Delmonico: Correct. Regular paint would have no effect on it whatsoever. I mean, so it still is an active lead on the wall. Encapsulants that will give you a concealed coating on there, they would basically hide it behind a coating. So, they aren't really stopping it from being affected. So, if that coating would ever be disrupted or broken through, well the lead would have an effect on you again. Whereas, with ECOBOND, that's taken away because it is coated with that patented material that makes it inert and makes it have the protection built into the coat.

ECOBOND® Paint And with that being said, our product proven through ASTM and EPA testing methods for lead hazard reduction of 86% in bio accessibility, 99% airborne lead dust reduction, 95% overall lead reduction and acid rain leaching resistance up to 98%. Is there anything else you would like to mention about ECOBOND?

Paul Delmonico: Well, I'd like to tell you about the product. The ECOBOND standard has Bitrex in it. I don't know if anybody's familiar with Bitrex, but what it is, is it's a substance that we put in there that causes the material that tastes horrible. And I mean it tastes horrible. So, what this does is it would cause children or anybody that would actually put it in their mouth to immediately want to spit it out. Double function. I mean, they put this on some other items, soaps and different things, that would make them want to spit it out. And that's what it's made for. And it does its job extremely well. The ECOBOND products all have a very low VOC system. They're way below national average, all of them in that 10 grams per liter range, which makes them, again, a very healthy type product to be able to be around. No smell and a water-based system, so they dry rapidly. They do actually have a mildew and mold preventive system into them. A broad-spectrum system that prevents a lot of the environmental products or environmental things that can happen to a paint. So, we like the fact that we don't get mold growth or mildew growth and it can be used interior or exteriorly. And also, it does have fire properties, which is just amazing in paints. Most paint you have to buy specifically just for fire retardants. Well this one kind of just naturally it's part of what its makeup is, so it will not burn under a flame system situation. So, it does help you in that matter too.

ECOBOND® Paint So it is a fire-resistant product? Paul Delmonico: It is a fire-resistant product, basically it will not burn. ECOBOND® Paint And with the new formula that we've come out with, the viscosity has improved quite a bit. Can you talk a little bit about that? Paul Delmonico: Yeah. What the viscosity is, is that's more transferring energy to the paint from our application, roller, brush spray. So, what we're trying to do is we're trying to make it more friendly to apply. And so that's what we've done. We've increased the viscosity and increased its ability to apply more friendly.
